Hahaha...
I just have to ask a question... what do you think of in your head when you see "hahaha"? I say this because my mental interpretation of someone else's "hahaha" (or "jajaja") has gotten me into trouble several times.
Most people say it depends on the context... but let's test that shall we.
Context: Long day at work... a text is sent: "I love you."
Reply: "Hahaha... me too."
Now, there are a few ways to interpret this... 1) girlish giggling, 2) um, the thought of you loving me made me break out into laughter, 3) I got distracted by that clown for a second... oh and me too, 4) are you really thinking there are four interpretations to this text, woah... issues. (Ok, the forth one I added in.) But I'm sure that there have been many a fight started because of the words "hahaha." Maybe even, wars... ok that just got too deep.

Comments
1. "lol" (I imagine someone throwing their head back in laughter because something is really funny.)
2. "ha" (not really a laugh, more of an expression used when you don't believe what someone says or you don't agree with what they say.)
3. "hahaha" (I read this expression to thing that someone thinks something is funny... maybe not as funny as lol but along those lines.)
4. "hehehe" (= girlish giggling or laughing like you are shy or coy)
But I think you're right about the clown thing. But by saying "me too" it makes me think that that person love them self too. Wouldn't you say "you too" instead of "me too"? I don't know. All I'm saying is that if I wrote "I love you" to Scott and he answered back with "Hahaha... me too." I'd be very confused and wonder if he had been texting someone else and the text accidentally came to me instead. Let's just say he'd have some 'splainin' to do. :)
