Smiley Face

Alright, I think I've gotten a little smiley face happy lately when typing emails. I'm not sure what I'm hoping the smiley face will do, but I think it's time to evaluate what's really going on here... especially when you see a sentence like this (taken from a recent email):

"Wanna double with xxxxx and I sometime? :) ;) I think that would be fun. :)"

Ya. That happened. I've thought this through (and yes, I do actually think about things like this, for all of you wondering)... I think it can be for a couple of reasons
  1. Happiness: Typically when you see someone smiling a lot you think it's because they are super happy. Now, I'm not particularly sad, but I wouldn't say I'm happy in the sense of always grinning from ear to ear. So that can't be it.
  2. OCD: This one might have more validity than I'm willing to admit. I could have the strange OCD habit of including smiley faces in, near, and around all sentences that evoke any sort of emotion from me. The reason I say ANY emotions, is because you don't typically see me including emoticons for anything besides something with a smile. I don't typically write "I had a hard day. :S Something someone said made me sad. :(" Because even when I'm sad, I put smiley faces. Maybe it's a macro in my brain.
  3. Jokester: This is the reason with the most logical sway in my mind. I like to laugh and have a fun time. I don't tend to take myself too serious all that often and so I include smiley faces to offset my jokes and witty comments for others. In a sense, a smiley face gives me to ability to be more free with what I say.
So I love you Mr. Smiley face you change sentences like "Dude, you're freakin crazy!" into "Dude, you're freakin' crazy! :)" Love it!

I use smiley faces ALL the time. I think I do it because if there is a chance that I feel like anyone would take what I say in the wrong way, I put a smiley face so they know I don't mean anything but to be nice.... or something to that effect. I think most people who know me know that I would say anything just to be mean and they know I don't get angry at things, so I don't know why I still feel like I need to use them all the time. But I just do. Funny. :)

Haha! I'm the same way. Between the smiley faces and exclamation points I feel completely hyper whenever I type anything, but what other way to show my enthusiasm and joy? It's just nice to have that added oomph!
